Medicare Advantage Plans 2021 - 3 Biggest Changes
We’ll start with some big changes for Medicare Advantage plans in 2021. As everyone knows 2020 was a very challenging year to say the least. In response to the Covid19 virus as well as other situations, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has decided to implement some new regulations.
There are 3 big changes to Advantage plans and each is a very positive one. These are:
Improved and Expanded Telehealth services to Seniors
An updated Medicare Part D coverage limit
The ability for those with end-stage renal disease to apply for Advantage plans
Improved and Expanded Telehealth services to Seniors
Due to the coronavirus and the challenges and safety issues it brings, telehealth services have now been expanded for those on Medicare advantage plans in 2021. With the use of technology, people may now use the internet and video conferencing for services otherwise only obtained in the doctor’s office.
Members can now receive care via the safety of their own homes, all done virtually. This is a great benefit, especially for those who have trouble leaving the home.
Updated and Improved Part D drug coverage limits
Medicare Part D for 2021 now has raised initial coverage limits that people with advantage plans will benefit from. When the retail cost of your prescription drugs throughout the year reaches a certain level (The initial coverage level) you are required to pay far more money for your prescriptions.
In 2020 this level is $4020. For 2021 the new level will be $4130, hopefully delaying this period for many people.
End-stage Renal Disease and Medicare Advantage plans for 2021
Thanks to the 21st Century Cures Act, Congress has stated that effective January of 2021 individuals with end-stage renal disease may now be eligible to enrill in 2021 Medicare advantage plans.
For many seniors, Medicare advantage plans cover essential medical expenses that they often have trouble paying for on their own. Advantage plans cover medical costs and services that aren’t often covered by another individual plan.
You can purchase multiple insurance plans to cover the expanse of what Medicare Advantage covers, but why do that when you could just sign up for a single Advantage plan instead?
All Medicare Advantage 2021 plans will cover you for same base coverage. There may be some additional coverage on top of that that would be considered optional.
The base coverage consists of Medicare parts A and B, emergency medical coverage and urgently needed coverage.
There are several different insurance carriers offering Advantage plans, and of course they have networks. You’ll need to find a plan that is available in your area and make sure your doctor’s that you currently have accept the plan.

It’s often cheaper to go with a packaged version of the plan- one that is already included in Medicare Advantage, than to pay for a separate Part D plan and a separate Advantage plan.
Of course, you will want to compare the prices to make that assessment, and you can do that here on our website.

You will need to meet certain requirements in order to be considered eligible for Medicare Advantage. For starters you must first be eligible for Medicare and have both Part A and B in place.
Be living in the coverage area of your preferred insurance provider when you apply
Be subscribed to Medicare Part B (typically through an Original Medicare plan); Keep Paying your Part B premium
Not have any disqualifying medical condition
In order to meet one of those requirements- having a Part B coverage plan- you generally need to be 65 or older, in most cases.
You can talk to a Medicare representative to find out if you qualify for Medicare earlier. Most people will be automatically enrolled in both Part A and Part B of Medicare when they turn age 65.
You can also be automatically enrolled in them when you qualify for disability.
You can then find a plan that is in your area and your doctors participate in. This will likely be either an HMO, or a PPO. The differences are explained below.

Since Medicare Advantage is sold privately, and it isn’t available through Medicare directly, you will have to choose a medical insurance carrier to purchase your plan from.
If you decide on Medicare Advantage as your insurance plan, then you have to decide between the many insurance companies.
You may want to base your decision on how much they charge for the plan, whether or not they have the plan that you want, what kind of perks they offer you for being a member with them and how well they will treat you as their customer.
Here are a few of our top choices for medical insurance carriers.
There are plenty of others, but these stand out to us for some of the same reasons we just listed:
You can choose from a large selection of Medicare Advantage policies with Humana.
They offer plans such as Humana Choice Pro and Humana Gold Choice to give you some options.
Signing up with them entitles you to some powerful member perks that they aren’t going to charge you extra for.
When you get a Humana Medicare Advantage 2021, you will also receive access to one of the nation’s largest coverage networks.
What Blue Cross Blue Shield is primarily known for their competitive pricing.
They tend to have some of the lowest rates in the industry, and you can see that for yourself when you use our website and source prices here.
Any of the Blue Cross Medicare Advantage 2021 plans you get will generally not have a lot of member perks attached, but that’s what you get when you pay a much lower rate than the industry average.
Still, Blue Cross does an excellent job of ensuring its customers are taken care of, and they have a good reputation for customer service.
Aetna is another insurance provider that will offer a lot of great member perks.
These include home drop-off of medications, diet and fitness plans that are personalized to you, fitness membership programs and more.
They also prioritize customer convenience through the use of their mobile app and by ensuring customers have access to professional medical counsel 24 hours a day.
On top of all that, their rates are surprisingly affordable.
These are a few of the better, national options, and if you use our site to compare prices, you will see a few others.
Take your time in picking a healthcare insurance provider, as choosing one over another can make a big difference in the kind of experience you have.
Your Carrier’s Network
No matter which of the carriers you choose, you will need to be aware of their network and its limits.
You should find out about how far their network extends in your local area and if the hospitals, clinics and doctor’s offices that you go to will be under their network coverage.
You should realize that there will be some healthcare facilities where their network will not extend to.
The carriers will give you some network options, and many of their plans will be abled with network selections like HMO or PPO.
If you aren’t familiar with these terms and how they relate to coverage, we will break them down for you here.
You can save a lot of money or waste a lot of money depending on which one you pick and what your network situation is like.
These will cover you only with your insurance carrier’s network.
They do not provide any coverage outside of the network for you, so you need to watch where you go for medical care.
If you want any coverage from your plan, you will need to restrict your treatment to network facilities.
This is the most common network option, and the reason people would opt for such a restrictive plan is because it is inexpensive.
With a PPO network option, you will be covered both on and off the network.
You get full coverage while in the network, but once you go outside, the PPO will cover you only partially.
Still, that’s better than nothing, and you can expect to pay a higher price for this kind of expansive coverage.
Most Medicare Advantage plans for 2021 will come with a PPO or HMO option, and if it is included, then it will be part of the plan’s name.
So, it’s very easy to tell if you are getting one of these options.
You might be unsure of which one to go with, and we can help with that.
Just contact us to get some more information and our expert advice on which network option might be best for you.
Medicare Advantage 2021 Enrollment & Coverage
There will be some medical insurance plans that simply will not work with a Medicare Advantage plan.
They will be incompatible due to their overlapping coverage.
So, any medical insurance plan that offers some of the same coverage as a Medicare Advantage plan is off the table.
You’ll have to choose between one plan or the other.
Medicare Supplements are never compatible with Medicare Advantage plans.
There are also called Medigap plans, and you cannot have one of them at the same time as an Advantage plan.
You will also usually need to drop any union or employer healthcare plan as well, if you are signing up for a Medicare Advantage plan, since there will typically be some overlap.
We told you earlier that Medicare Advantage will often include Medicare Part D.
If that is the case, then you will need to cancel any existing Part D plan you have before you sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan with Part D included.
Even though the two Part D plans could be slightly different, they are not different enough that you can be signed up for both at the same time.
For any question on plan compatibility, please talk to us.
We would be happy to help you figure out which plans you can keep and which ones have to go in order for you to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan.
